Duterte Will “Never Cooperate” With Any ICC Complaint Until Term Ends
DUTERTE WILL NEVER COOPERATE – President Rodrigo Duterte will not cooperate in any International Criminal Court probe into the “War On Drugs”.
Recently, Presidential Spokesperson and former human rights lawyer, Harry Roque said that Duterte will never entertain the ICC “until the end of his term on June 30, 2022”. Furthermore, Roque criticized ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda decision to ask for a “full blown investigation” into the Philippines “War on Drugs”.
Following his inauguration into the Presidency, Duterte vowed to end illegal drugs in the Philippines in six months. However, with a year left in his term, illegal drug trafficking, buying, and selling have still been prevalent.
Meanwhile, Roque cited that Bensouda’s actions were “legally erroneous” and “politically motivated”. But, Roque did not further elaborate on his words regarding the outgoing ICC prosecutor.
Moreover, Roque explained that the Philippines would not be cooperating with investigations since it has pulled out from the court back in March 17, 2019. Additionally, Bensouda’s preliminary examination merely covers the period before the Philippines stepped away from the ICC.
Along with this, Roque also believes that ICC investigations into the matter could only build evidences from hearsay, communists, and politicians who are against the President. Still, Roque could not further elaborate his claims regarding connections between the ICC and communists.
