In the viral video, Xiao was seen fighting back at the attacker after being punched. As a result, Xiao then picked up a stick and hit the foreign man while shouting, “You bum! Why did you hit me?”, the USA Today reported.
After the incident, a GoFundme fundraiser has been set up by his grandson to cover Xiao’s medical expenses. She has reached over US$900,000 from thousands of supporters. The initial goal of the fundraiser was to raise only US$50,000.
Xiao has decided to donate all proceeds to the Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) community. Her grandson John Chen said she stated multiple times to donate all the funds generated to the Asian American community to combat racism.
