Bello Denies Nurse For Vaccine Exchange With UK, Germany Despite Reports
BELLO DENIES NURSE EXCHANGE – Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III denied reports that Filipino nurses were used to bargain for free vaccines.
Recently, Alice Visperas, the director of the Labor Department’s International Affairs Bureau said the PH was willing to lift the “medical professional cap” in exchange for vaccines.
Currently, the limit of Filipino nurses and health workers allowed to leave the country for work is at 5,000. As such, Visperas said that if a deal was made, they could allow more health workers to enter the UK or Germany.
However, according to Bello, the Labor Department had nothing to do with the deal. “Wala kaming kinalaman dyan sa status ng vaccine”, he said.
Instead, Bello explained that his department merely wanted health workers vaccinated before being deployed. According to an article from Inquirer, he said:
Ang daming nagsasalita hindi naman nila alam ang nangyari. Kung ide-deploy natin sila, tiyakin natin na ligtas sila, may vaccine na sila
Meanwhile, Daniel Pruce, the UK Ambassador to the Philippines emphasized that they would never make a deal with the PH for nurses in exchange for vaccines.
