1,554 Cities and Towns of the Philippines participated in Earth Hour 2011

Success of the Earth Hour 2011 was joined by over 5 million Filipinos.

Earth Hour 2011 had been a record-breaking activity participated by a total of 1,554 towns and cities throughout the Philippines as lights have been switched off for 60 minutes Saturday evening.

This was announced by the World Wide Fund for Nature Philippines (WWF-Philippines) in participation for the world’s campaign against climate change.

WWF-Philippines reported today that the Philippines have been surrounded by temporary darkness which lasted for about 60 minutes at exactly 08:30 p.m. yesterday eve.

This year’s  participation exceeded last year’s record by a number of 478.

Furthermore, there were thousands of individuals gather on the grounds of SM Mall of Asia as they attended the main switch-off ceremony.

Both public and private organizations and the media support the Earth Hour which is annually organized by WWF-Philippines.

Earth Hour National Director Atty. Gia Ibay said, “We are elated to clinch the top spot for the third year in a row.”

The Earth Hour Philippines has been celebrating climate change solutions since the year 2008. In fact, the Philippines ranked one when it comes to number of participations of towns and cities in both year 2009 and 2010. 611MWh have been saved in the year 2009 that can be measured equal to a dozen coal-fired power-plants that were temporarily shutdown.

On the other hand, 131 countries were recorded to join in Earth Hour 2011. This only signifies that billions of people across the world supports in the campaign against climate change.

An estimation of  more than 5 million Filipinos united in cooperation for this year’s switch-off.

Organizers of the  Earth Hour were grateful for those sectors and groups who willingly extended their efforts to make the campaign more successful.

  1. What the different cities in country did was very timely. I really don’t know the reason why our weather behaves in this manner at present. It’s rainy in summer and very hot in rainy season. Were you also able to observe the same things that i was able to see? Maybe this is just a prelude of what we call global warming. Indeed, every small ways that we do would be of great help. Just the mere turning off of lights for an hour would be of huge help to the environment already. This is a big accomplishment for the Philippines. I’m already tired of negative news and this good news keeps me away from pessimism.
