PARTS OF A FLOWER – In this topic, we are going to know the following parts of a flower and the definition of each.
Flowers are the reproductive organs of a plant which eventually develop into fruits. They are the distinguishing characteristic of flowering plants, or known as angiosperms.
There are two types of flowers: perfect flowers and imperfect flowers. Perfect flowers are known to be hermaphrodites, which means that they have both male and female reproductive parts; while imperfect flowers are unisexual.
Parts and Definition
According to Sciencing, here are the following flower parts:
- Sepals
- They are green leaf-like structures which covers the flower buds. All sepals form the whorl called the calyx.
- Some flowers have sepals that are modified into bracts, which are small leaf-like structures present around a flower.
- Petals
- The most prominent part of a flower structure due to their vivid color, and in some cases, scent. Their main function is to attract pollinators and also protect the inner reproductive structures of a flower.
- Stamens
- The male part of a flower, which forms the inner third whorl of a flower structure called the androecium.
- Each stamen is comprised of a long tubular filament with a sac called the anther at the top.
- Carpels
- The female part of a flower that form the innermost whorl of a flower structure called the gynoecium. Like that of humans, each carpel has a swollen sac-like base called the ovary.
