DOH Says LGUs Can’t Procure Vaccines On Their Own
DOH ON VACCINE PROCUREMENT – LGUs such as Makati announced that their residents would get free access to vaccines.
Recently, Makati Mayor Abby Binay announced on her official Twitter that the city has allocated P1 billion for vaccine procurement. However, she did not disclose what type of vaccine they planned to procure.
On her Twitter page, she posted:
Guidelines for online registration to be announced soon. I want the free COVID-19 vaccine to be available and accessible to ALL Makatizens. Stay safe! – Mayora Abby.
But, following this, the Department of Health reminded LGUs that they can’t procure their own coronavirus vaccines. According to an article from Philstar, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire stressed that only the national government may procure the vaccines against COVID-19.
During the Health Department’s weekly public briefing, Vergeire said:
“Yung Emergency Use Authority na ibibigay ng Food And Drug Administration dito sa mga manufacturers ng bakuna… Ang pwede pa lang bumili niyan ay national government kasi EUA pa lang siya.”
Vergeire explains that the only time the vaccine may be available in the market is when it has a certificate of product registration (CPR). She added that the vaccines can’t receive a CPR as most have yet to finish clinical trials.
Furthermore, she encouraged all LGUs to work with the national government so they can pool the funds to procure the vaccines.
“Hopefully, the local governments can work with us. We can assure the local governments that based on the prioritization list, kasama kayong lahat dito sa aming listahan”.
