According to a report from GMA News, the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 216 has found the couple guilty of kidnapping and serious illegal detention.

They were sentenced to reclusion perpetua or up to 40 years of imprisonment. The Tiamzons were reportedly top officials of the Communist Party of the Philippines.

The couple were also directed to pay P75,000 to Lieutenant Abraham Claro Casis as moral damages; P75,000 as civil indemnity; and P75,000 as exemplary damages.

These came from a 1988 case where four soldiers were held captive by the CPP for two months. The court’s decision was welcomed by Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra.

“I still have to read the entire decision. But it’s a victory for the prosecution, so as SOJ I am happy about the outcome of the trial,”

Based on the report, the Tiamzons were also among the accused in the murder case which came from the discovery of a mass grave in Leyte which contains suspected victims of communist purge during the 80s.

They were arrested in 2014 in Barangay Zaragoza in Aloguinsan, Cebu by cops and soldiers and were released in 2016 to join the peace negotiations and participate as consultants of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines, the CPP’s political wing.
