The first-ever selfie of the world’s most respected religious leader, Pope Francis, went viral on various social networking sites after it was posted on Facebook and Twitter by a group of teenagers visiting the Vatican.

The photo of Pope Francis first appeared on the Facebook page of one of the youngsters, who used it as his profile picture, the photo went viral immediately on social media on Saturday.

The “selfie photo of Pope Francis,” comes in the same week that the Oxford English Dictionary included the word “selfie” to denote a self-taken photograph on a smartphone.

According to a news report from AFP, the young believers were part of a church group from Northern Italy who met with the Pope, the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics on Wednesday.

The 76-year-old pope from Latin American has repeatedly broken with Vatican tradition since being elected in March, including regularly picking up the phone and calling ordinary people who write to him.

Pope Francis wanted to be so close to the people and believers of the Catholic Faith, according to some Twitter users, they were delighted with the way the Pope deals with people.
