DOT: Family Road Trips, Local Travel Could Be Key To Revive Local Tourism
DOT – The Department of Tourism said that family road trips could be the key to the revival of the tourism in the Philippines.
According to ABS-CBN News, the tourism department already made measures to uplift the industry.
Tourism Undersecretary Benito Bengzon said that one the quarantine protocol has been uplifted, domestic travel, beginning with short-distance trips, may uplift the industry.
“We believe that, for the rest of the year, what will really trigger the activities is itong domestic tourism movement,”
“Mag-uumpisa ‘yan mga domestic travel, medyo mga short distance muna siguro by land lang muna. And then siguro ‘yung mga kasama mo ‘yung pamilya mo or at least ‘yung mga kabisado mo ang travel history,”
Tourism is among the sectors that bore the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic due to travel and leisure restrictions.
Bengzon said that foreign tourist arrivals dropped by 35% for the first three months, generating at about ₱85 billion.
He added that the department has set aside a budget amounting to ₱36 billion in order to help businesses in the industry recover from the crisis.
“Ang priority po namin is to help them by way of working capital at doon sa wage subsidies,”
As per the report, the department appealed to the public to prioritize local travel once restrictions are lifted. This is in order to aid the recover the nation’s industry,
“Once we’re given that green light, unahin talaga natin ‘yung domestic tourism para matulungan natin ‘yung mga restaurant at resorts na nagsara at nawalan ng revenue,”
