WHAT IS ALIMASAG – As an archipelago, the Philippines is home to several types of seafood.
In this article, we are going to talk about the Alimasag, a crab that is farely similar to the Alimango. However, what are the differences between the two?
The “A-li-ma-sag” is a smaller crab species than that of the alimango which are also known as mud crabs or black crabs. Meanwhile, the alimasag is known as blue crab or sea crab.
Due to the environment which they thrive in, both species have distinct features. Because it lives in the mud, the alimango has dark, thich shells and large legs.
However, the blue crab is spotted and has thin shells and thin legs making it more agile within the water. When eating this crab, you would sometimes encounter an orange-red substance inside its shell.
This is called aligi or aligue. Basically, this substance is the crab eggs or crab spawn. Moreover, this type of seafood has been a delicacy to Filipinos with no part of the crab being wasted for food.
