This is yet another story from Aesop’s fables, as mentioned above. It is numbered 235 in the Perry Index. It tells the story of the growing friendship between the mighty lion and the tiny mouse.

Like the Lion and the Mouse, it is meant to show us mutual dependence regardless of size or status. It also shows the reward of a compassionate behaviour.

The difference between the lion and the dove is that the dove shows genuine compassion out of its good nature, while the lion showed compassion upon appeal.

Here is the full text of the story uplifted from Read.gov:

A dove saw an ant who fell into a brook. The tiny insect struggled in vain to reach the bank. Filled with pity, the dove dropped a blade of straw near the insect. The ant clung to the straw like a sailor who had his ship wrecked and is holding on to a broken spar. Eventually it floated safely to shore.

Not long after, the Ant saw a man who is about to kill the dove with a stone. Just as the man was about to cast the stone directly to the dove, the ant stung him in the heel, which made the man miss his aim. This startled the dove, who flew to safety in a distant wood.

A kindness is never wasted.
