The President of the Republic of the Philippines, Pres. Aquino signed the “K to 12 program” into law that will add two more years to basic education in the Philippines.
The Republic Act 10533 was signed into law seeking to institutionalize the government’s “K to 12 program” which was already introduced by the Department of Education (DepEd) to schools all over the country last school year.
The law will restructured basic education in the Philippines by requiring Filipino students to undergo one year in Kindergarten, six years in primary schools, four years in junior high school and two years in senior high school.
Aside from the additional two years, the legislation will require teachers to use a region’s mother tongue as medium of instruction from Grades 1 to 3. Some of the most prominent personalities in the government such as House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr., Education chief Bro. Armin Luistro, Senators and House members who authored the legislation were present.
