Mars is the fourth planet of the solar system. It is named after the Roman version of Ares, the Greek god of war.

Due to its reddish and bloody color, the Egyptians named the planet Her Dasher, which is translated into English as the red one.

The reddish color is due to the loose dust composed of iron-rich minerals, which explains its rusty color, hence, making the planet look red.

Moons

The planet has two moons which are named after the Greek twins of Ares. Here are the following moons:

Phobos
- The innermost and larger natural satellite discovered in 1877 by Asaph Hall. The moon was named after the Greek god and personification of fear. It is a small, irregular object and is seven times larger than the other.
Deimos
- The smaller and outermost natural satellite also discovered in 1877 by Asaph Hall. The moon was named after the twin brother of Phobos and the personification of terror. It has a mean radius of about 6.2 kilometers or 3.9 miles.
