Lewis The Koala Saved from Raging Bushfires by Elderly Woman Already Died
Lewis, the koala rescued from the Australian bushfires by a kindhearted elderly woman, has passed away as a result of the injuries he sustained.
Bushfires raging through eastern Australia in recent weeks have killed at least six people and destroyed hundreds of homes, the New South Wales Rural Fire Service reported. The blazes have also killed hundreds of koalas and laid to waste thousands of acres of habitat that could land the cuddly Aussie icons on the endangered species list.
The animal became caught up in the raging bushfires of Port Macquarie last week. Grandmother Toni Doherty witnessing his plight and literally taking the shirt off her back to rescue him.
Risking her own safety, Toni used her shirt to wrap up the terrified koala, who became trapped as he tried to cross a road. The grandma then used a water bottle to cool its burnt skin and quench its thirst.
Recently, weeks after Ellenborough Lewis, the koala was saved from the raging bushfires, he died. According to the article of CNN, Port Macquarie Koala Hospital made the decision to euthanize Lewis Tuesday after inspecting his wounds.
Lewis had already been receiving “substantial pain relief,” and the hospital warned Saturday that it was considering putting him to sleep if it was determined that “his injuries and his pain are not treatable and tolerable.”
