Chinese New Year 2013 Holiday Inquiry

Is the upcoming Chinese New Year a holiday in the Philippines? This is one of the most common inquiry we have received for the past few days. Based upon the official lists of Philippine Holidays, the Chinese New Year is not a holiday for it falls on Sunday.

The Chinese New Year will be held this coming February 10, which coincided with Sunday, meaning this will not be declared as a Holiday.

Last year the Chinese Holiday was declared by Malacanang as a non-working holiday because it falls on Monday. The National government justified last year’s celebration as a “manifestation of our solidarity with our Chinese Filipino brethren who have been part of our lives in many respects as a country and as a people.”

The Chinese New Year is more popularly known as the Spring Festival considered as one of the most important holidays for our Chinese brothers.
