This system, as mentioned before, is also known as the cardiovascular system. Its function is to deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues and equalizes body temperature.

According to LiveScience, it consists of three independent systems: the system, when you refer to the heart, the lungs or the pulmonary system, and the systemic, which consists of the arteries, veins, coronary and portal vessels.

Parts and Function

  • Arteries
    • These carry blood that is rich in oxygen from the heart and through the body
  • Veins
    • These carry blood that is poor in oxygen and leads them back to the heart
  • Heart
    • A muscular organ which has four chambers. It is located behind and slightly left of the breastbone. This organ pumps blood through the arteries and veins. It consist of the following:
      • Superior vena cava
        • This carries the oxygen-poor blood into the heart
      • Aorta
        • This carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the organs and tissues
      • Right Atrium
        • receives blood from the veins and pumps it to the right ventricle.
      • Right ventricle
        • receives blood from the right atrium and pumps it to the lungs, this is where the oxygen comes from.
      • Left atrium
        • receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it to the left ventricle.
      • Left ventricle
        • pumps oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body.
