National Youth Commissions Head Aims To Separate Classes For Boys And Girls
YOUTH COMMISSIONS – The National Youth Commissions (NYC) Head recently proposed to separate classes for boys and girls in Grades 7 up to 12.
According to ABS-CBN this is in order to curb the rate of teenage pregnancy. Ryan Enriquez, head of NYC pointed out the increasing cases of teenage females that got pregnant and a high rate of HIV cases on 15 to 30 year old people, which prompted him to make the proposal.
.Enriquez also pointed out that many students already have girlfriends and boyfriends and whenever they have a take home activity, that is where they initiate intercourse, resulting to teenage mothers.
“Maraming mga grade school pa lang, mag-girlfriend at boyfriend sila dahil magkaklase sila. At kung meron silang activity na magsasama sila sa isang bahay, doon nangyayari, pwedeng maging teenage mother agad-agad,”
Enriquez said the proposal is made so that the boys and girls do not need to be together for projects and there will no longer be an overnight.
He added that through this, HIV awareness, as well as sex education will be taught more properly, further adding if the girl is curious and she has a male classmate, the temptation is there.
As per the report, about 196, 000 Filipinos between 15 to 19 years of age gets pregnant each year, according to the Commission on Population (POPCOM).
As for HIV cases, the rate among 15 to 24 year old people increased from 17% to 29%.
