Pinoy taxi driver in Kuwait helps fellow OFW regardless if he breaks the law
A Filipino taxi driver in Kuwait has broken the law in order to help his fellow Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) who experienced maltreatment from their employers.
OFW Jelamar Fuentes uses his Facebook account with the name “Dave” to communicate with other Pinoys in Kuwait. Through Messenger, they plan how a distressed OFW can get away.
Based on GMA’s report, that was the way of Fuentes to extend help to his “kababayans”.
“Mukhang ang chinarge sa kaniya is parang kidnapping. We will provide the legal assistance for him,” Chargé d’Affaires Mohammad Noordin Lomondot stated.
Screenshots of part of his conversation with a Filipina showed that the latter gave her the address and promised to give him money for helping her.
For Fuentes, there was nothing wrong in what he did for his fellow OFW.
He is now in the custody of the Office of the Domestic Welfare Affairs.
The Pinoy cab driver even said that he is not afraid because he just helped his “kababayan”.
“Hinding-hindi talaga ako natatakot. Wala naman ako tinatago na iligal. Wala namang problema basta ‘yung kababayan natin natulungan ko lang,” Fuentes stated.
Based on the report, a controversial video of the rescue of OFWs by Philippine Embassy staff from their Kuwaiti employers surfaced on the internet.
Because of this, a conflict happened. The Kuwaiti government seen the act as a violation of its sovereignty and “inappropriate behavior.”
After that incident, there was Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) inked between Philippines and Kuwait. This is to protect the rights and welfare of Filipinos working in the said country.
