It is not common for a Muslim woman to join beauty pageants wherever part of the globe and winning is much surprising.
There are Filipinos who expressed happiness to the achievement of the Muslim beauty queen from Mindanao. However, there are those, especially her fellow Muslims who criticized her for joining the pageant.
It is known that people who are observing the Islamic beliefs follows a certain kind of dress code. Muslim women usually wears hijab or veil around their neck that also covers their head.
They also observe modesty when it comes to wearing dresses. On the other hand, since Sharifa Akeel joined the Mutya ng Pilipinas 2018, she needed to wear dresses that showed more skin.
Moreover, beauty pageants automatically has swimsuit competition. Because of this, the Muslim beauty queen received bashing.
Based on the report from Bombo Radyo, Sharifa Akeel received mean comments on social media. She got criticized for exposing her too much skin during the pageant.
Reportedly, she was also blamed for the calamities that are happening in the country now.

Based on the report, Sharifa Akeel said that joining and winning in Mutya ng Pilipinas 2018 is a representation beauty, intelligence and character of a Muslim woman.
She also wants to prove that Islam is a religion of peace and that she wants unity between Muslims and Christians.
