Wendy’s PH Database Affected by Data Breach

Records from Wendy’s PH website has been exposed following recent data breach.

DATA BREACH- Over 80,000 records including users’ personal data were exposed following the infiltration of Wendy’s Philippines website last month.

Wendy’s is an American fast-food chain founded by Dave Thomas in Columbus, Ohio. Research claims that by the year 2016, Wendy’s was the third largest hamburger fast food chain with Burger King and McDonald’s dominating the top spot.

The first Wendy’s hamburger restaurant in the Philippines opened on December 8, 1983, under Wenphil Corporation. Presently, Wendy’s is among the top 500 corporations in the country operating 41 stores and still counting.

On April 2018, Wendy’s Philippines website was reportedly manipulated by “yet unknown persons” and that personal data of users were obtained.

Based on a report from Inquirer, the National Privacy Commission (NPC) reported on May 4 that around 82, 150 records of customers and job applicants including names, addresses, hashed passwords, modes of payment and transaction details were bared in the said leak.

In relation to the case, NPC issued an order addressed to Wenphil Corp. to inform users affected by the data breach. The document, which NPC released on May 2, gave a 72-hour extension for the fast-food chain company to comply.

According to NPC, there is “real risk of serious harm” to the subjects whose personal data were published online.

“On an analysis of the information exfiltrated, it can be ascertained that the exposure of certain sensitive personal or financial information within the database puts the affected data subjects in harm’s way,” NPC’s order states.

As of the report, the National Privacy Commission also requested the food firm to explain and defend why further action should not be taken against the occurrence of the breach.
