Hitmaker Barry Manilow on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 (Philippine time) finally admitted that he is gay.
According to a report published by Inquirer.net, the 73-year-old singer-songwriter came out of the closet during an interview with the People Magazine.
The report noted that he kept silent regarding his almost four-decade relationship with his manager Garry Kief to avoid disappointing his largely female fan base.
Barry Manilow began his relationship with then TV executive Garry Kief in 1978- who soon became his manager. The two tied the knot in 2014. They kept their relationship until their marriage has been publicized and made headlines in 2015.
The Brooklyn native came to prominence with his chart-topping singles including “Mandy”, “Can’t Smile Without You”, and “Copacabana (At the Copa)”.
“I thought I would be disappointing them if they knew I was gay. So I never did anything,” Barry Manilow said. “I was one of the lucky ones. I was pretty lonely before that,” he added.
After the interview, Barry Manilow took to micro-blogging site Twitter where he expressed his gratitude to all his supporters. “I am grateful to have wonderful fans supporting me,” he wrote.
Barry Manilow was previously married to a woman he dated during high school. However, they got divorced for he said he was too young to settle down at the time.
Just recently, he released his latest album entitled “This Is My Town”. The album features pop standards and original composition of critically acclaimed singer particular songs about The Empire State or New York.
