This Sardine Can Costume Just Stole The Spotlight at Miss Universe PH 2026
MISS UNIVERSE PH – A Miss Universe Philippines 2026 candidate captured attention after unveiling a surprising sardine can-inspired national costume.
A candidate in the Miss Universe Philippines 2026 pageant caught widespread attention during the national costume competition with a unique and creative interpretation of this year’s theme, water. Among the standout participants was Alex Colmenares of Negros Occidental, who earned a spot in the Top 6 Best in National Costume alongside representatives from Tacloban, Baguio, Pangasinan, Iloilo Province, and Pampanga.
While many contestants chose designs inspired by nature, heritage, and history, Colmenares took a more playful yet meaningful route. Her costume paid tribute to the province’s thriving sardine industry and the dedication of its fishermen, highlighting a significant part of Negros Occidental’s local identity.

The costume, titled “Victorias: Pride of the Visayan Seas,” was designed by Ruffy Itaas. It featured a striking, bright orange sardine can silhouette, instantly capturing attention on stage. Adding to its uniqueness was an intricately crafted headpiece resembling a plate of Spanish sardines. Beneath the bold exterior, Colmenares wore a modern, shimmering Filipiniana adorned with additional sardine-inspired elements, tying the entire concept together.
In a post shared on her Facebook page, the importance of her chosen theme was emphasized: “Sardines are among the premier and most essential fish species, serving as an affordable and vital source of protein in the Philippines,” read a post on Colmenares’ Facebook page. The message further highlighted the deeper meaning behind the design, stating, “More than a costume, it is a tribute to the pride, creativity, and identity of Negros Occidental.”

Following her Top 6 win, Colmenares expressed heartfelt appreciation to her designer for successfully bringing her vision to life. She shared, “With this year’s theme, water, we chose to highlight the Philippine sardine industry, giving voice to the fishermen and coastal communities of our province,” she said. She proudly concluded her message with, “Abanse, Negrense!”
The coronation night for Miss Universe Philippines 2026 is set for May 2 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. The winner will go on to represent the country at the Miss Universe pageant in Puerto Rico this November, succeeding Ahtisa Manalo, who placed third runner-up in the 2025 competition held in Thailand.
