Fyang Smith and JM Ibarra talked about the negative part of being in the entertainment industry
More than a year after their successful run on Pinoy Big Brother Gen 11, Big Winner Fyang Smith and JM Ibarra shared their thoughts on bashing and cancel culture in show business.
The duo first gained popularity in 2024 with their effortless chemistry inside the PBB house. This bond quickly blossomed into the massive “JMFyang” fandom.
With this, they are now one of the most prominent love teams of their generation. However, along with their stardom inevitably intense online scrutiny.
Based on the article in ABS-CBN Entertainment, during a tell-all session on Hot Takes, JM Ibarra and Fyang Smith opened up about the rollercoaster of living under the spotlight.
JM confessed that even with his thick skin, the constant wave of public backlash can still get under his skin.
“Ako, hindi naman ako masyadong naaapektuhan, kumbaga, nauuga lang kapag tumataliwas na ‘yung bashing [at] tumataliwas na sa akin. Nadadamay na ‘yung mga tao sa paligid ko na hindi naman sila ‘yung nasa industriya. ‘Yun ‘yung medyo alarming,” the actor said.
Fyang shared that she protected her peace by redefining how she used social media. The young actress said that she is choosing to step back from the digital world to handle negativity.
“Ako mas hindi na ako active sa social media. Hindi na ako super tulad ng dati na every day ‘yung mga ginagawa ko sa buhay, [pino-post]. Siguro ngayon, mas more on iniingatan ko na ‘yung private life ko,” she said.
JM shared a wider perspective when it comes to this. For him, viewing well-meaning criticism can be an opportunity for growth.
The actor also pointed out that cancel culture is often fueled by misinformation, leading to unfair judgments against artists without the full story. Despite this, he remained open to evolving when feedback is constructive
To guard their peace of mind, the duo makes a point of stepping away from the limelight.
Fyang Smith shared that hiking is their go-to moment to unwind. Just recently, their fans were delighted by posting photos from their treks up Mt. Pulag and Mt. Pinatubo.
