Vatican Provides Latest Update on Pope Francis’ Condition After Severe Respiratory Attack
POPE FRANCIS – The Vatican has released the latest update on Pope Francis’ condition following a severe respiratory attack, confirming that he remains under intensive medical care.
The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis remains in critical condition after suffering a severe respiratory attack that required high-flow oxygen and blood transfusions. The 88-year-old pontiff, currently battling double pneumonia, is under intensive medical care at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.
In a statement on Saturday, the Vatican reported that while the pope remains alert, he experienced a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis earlier in the day, necessitating oxygen therapy and additional medical interventions due to thrombocytopenia and anemia.

Doctors remain cautious about his condition, emphasizing that although he is not in immediate danger, his health is still unstable. Lead physician Professor Sergio Alfieri noted a slight improvement, allowing for a gradual reduction in medication, but stressed that Pope Francis remains vulnerable due to his age and existing health issues.
Vatican Cancels Sunday Angelus Prayer
Due to his deteriorating condition, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis will not deliver his customary Sunday Angelus prayer. Instead, the message will be published, as was done the previous week. This decision highlights the seriousness of his condition and the need for rest and medical care.
Speculation Over Possible Resignation
The pope’s hospitalization has reignited discussions about his ability to continue leading the Catholic Church. Comparisons have been drawn to Pope Benedict XVI’s historic resignation in 2013, though Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin dismissed these speculations as premature, urging focus on Francis’s recovery.
While Pope Francis has previously acknowledged the possibility of resignation, he has consistently viewed the papacy as a lifelong commitment. Nonetheless, he has also recognized the concerns surrounding his declining health, often addressing speculation with humor.

Prayers and Global Support
As the pope continues his treatment, nuns, priests, and faithful worldwide have gathered outside Gemelli Hospital to pray for his recovery. According to the report, Brazilian priest Don Wellison expressed his hope for the pontiff’s well-being, saying, “We are praying for the Holy Father, and we trust in God’s grace for his recovery.”
Known for his tireless work ethic and dedication to reforming the Church, Pope Francis has faced several health challenges in recent years, including colon surgery, a hernia operation, and ongoing mobility issues. As the Catholic Church’s 1.4 billion followers await further updates, the world continues to pray for his healing.
