Incoming chief executive of the Philippines, Pres. Duterte will fulfill his promise during the campaign period as he will let former Pres. Marcos at the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani as soon as possible during his terms as President of the Republic. Since the death of the former president in 1989, his burial at the heroes’ cemetery had been met with opposition.
During a press conference on Tuesday, Mayor Rody Duterte said that Pres. Marcos should be buried at the cemetery not because he was a hero but because he served as a soldier during his youths.
The incoming President was quoted as saying “I will allow Marcos burial in Libingan Ng Mga Bayani, not because he was a hero but because he was a Filipino soldier,” said Duterte.
When asked about the timeline of the burial, Duterte replied: “That can be arranged immediately.” He also noted that does not mind holding the burial of the late President on his anniversary this coming September 11. According to Mayor Duterte, denying Marcos a place at the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani has created division in the country.
“Iyang issue ni Marcos diyan sa Libingan Ng Mga Bayani has long created a division amongst our people. Almost all of the Ilokanos, naghihinakit talaga. Lahat. Halos lahat, mga Ilokano, galit kung bakit ganoon ang ginawa sa kanya,” he said.
“Sundalo iyan. Huwag na iyong hero hero. Huwag mong sabihin na lahat na namatay diyan sa Libingan Ng Mga Bayani, hero? Iba diyan retired eh,” Duterte added.
When President Duterte was asked if the decision will unite Filipinos, he replied that he does not know but noted that it would surely erase the hatred among Filipinos.
President Ferdinand Marcos is the father of Senator and Vice Presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos who is now trailing at the Vice Presidential race against Rep. Leni Robredo.
