Bacolod-based athlete Jerry Belibestre won the Philippines’ first gold medal in the ASEAN School in Brunei last Monday. The 17-year-old college freshman from the University of Negros Occidental Recoletos (UNO-R), in Bacolod City won the gold medal in the long jump event of the ASEAN School Games 2015.
According to Rappler’s news report, Jerry Belibestre leapt 7.47 meters in the long jump event of the ASEAN School Games. Although the Bacolod-based athlete failed to break the Philippine junior record of 7.53 meters held by his coach in Brunei, Joebert Delicano.
In the long jump event of the ASEAN School Games in Brunei, coming in second place is the jumper from Thailand scoring a 7.09 meters and a Malaysian landed landed third in 7.04 meters.
Jerry Belibestre is considered as the shortest jumper in Brunei who stands at 5-foot-5 but his jump made him the tallest in the field, during the ASEAN School Games.
The achievement of Jerry Belibestre made him the fourth best jumper in the Philippines after SEA Games winner Donovont Arriola, a Fil-Am, who cleared 7.64 meters. Number two is Julian Fuentes’ 7.55, followed by Janry Ubas’ 7.50 and Belibestre’s leap.
