Echoes Between Us – Season 1, Episode 2: The Town That Doesn’t Exist

Mara returns to the town, only to discover it doesn’t appear on any map.

Mara never made it home.

Instead, she boarded the first train leaving the station the next morning. She wanted to believe everything that had happened in Ashcroft was only a nightmare. However, one thing kept proving otherwise.

The brass key was still inside her coat pocket.

She pulled it out and examined it once more. It felt cold and heavy in her hand. The number 17 was still engraved near the handle, and the rust hadn’t disappeared overnight.

It wasn’t a dream.

She had seen Ethan.

As the train rolled through the countryside, a little girl sitting across the aisle stared at the key.

After several minutes, she quietly asked,

“Did he give that to you?”

Mara looked up.

“What did you say?”

The girl’s mother smiled apologetically.

“I’m sorry. She has quite an imagination.”

Before Mara could respond, the little girl pointed at the key.

“That’s Ethan’s.”

Mara’s heart skipped a beat.

“You know Ethan?”

The little girl opened her mouth to answer.

At that exact moment, the train entered a tunnel.

The lights flickered.

Darkness filled the cabin for only a second.

When the train emerged into daylight, Mara looked back toward the little girl.

She was gone.

Only her mother remained.

Confused, Mara stood up.

“Where’s your daughter?”

The woman frowned.

“I don’t have a daughter.”

Determined to find answers, Mara searched every map she could access.

She checked railway routes, satellite images, and government records. Then she searched travel websites and old newspaper archives.

Nothing.

Ashcroft wasn’t listed anywhere.

No maps showed it.

No articles mentioned it.

It was as if someone had carefully erased the town from history.

Still refusing to give up, Mara retraced her trip from the night before.

She boarded another train and counted every station.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five.

Six.

Seven.

The train never stopped unexpectedly.

Ashcroft never appeared.

When the journey ended, Mara approached the conductor.

“Our train broke down here last night,” she insisted.

The conductor looked puzzled.

“It arrived exactly on schedule.”

“It stopped.”

“No, ma’am.”

“I got off.”

The conductor examined her ticket before handing it back.

His expression suddenly changed.

“This ticket was issued today.”

Mara stared at it.

She clearly remembered using it the night before.

So why did it carry today’s date?

Her phone suddenly vibrated.

Unknown Number.

She answered immediately.

“Ethan?”

Only static replied.

Then she heard slow breathing.

Finally, his voice whispered through the interference.

“They’re fixing it.”

“What are they fixing?”

“The memory.”

“What memory?”

“The one you weren’t supposed to keep.”

The call ended.

When Mara checked her phone again, the number had vanished.

There was no missed call.

No call history.

Nothing.

Later that afternoon, Mara returned to the place where the convenience store had stood.

Her footsteps slowed.

The store was gone.

In its place was an empty lot covered with weeds.

A faded sign read:

COMING SOON

A man sweeping nearby noticed her staring.

“Looking for something?”

“There was a convenience store here.”

He laughed.

“There hasn’t been a store here for thirty years.”

Mara stepped backward.

Her foot struck something hidden beneath the dirt.

She bent down.

It was the same bottle of water she had dropped the night before.

The plastic was still wet.

Still cold.

She turned it over.

The expiration date…

…was tomorrow.

A voice whispered behind her.

“You weren’t supposed to find that.”

Mara spun around.

No one was there.

Her breathing quickened.

She looked toward a nearby storefront window.

Everyone reflected in the glass exactly as they should.

Except one man.

A figure wearing a long black coat stood perfectly still behind her reflection.

He wasn’t standing on the street.

Only in the glass.

Then another appeared.

Then another.

Soon dozens of identical men filled the reflection.

All of them were watching her.

Mara turned around.

The street was empty.

Her phone vibrated once more.

A new message appeared.

There was no sender.

Only three words.

YOU REMEMBERED AGAIN.

Before Mara could take a screenshot, the message disappeared.

Not deleted.

Gone.

A sudden gust of wind rolled the water bottle across the empty lot.

It stopped beside an old street sign hidden beneath thick vines.

Mara pulled the vines away.

One word was painted across the rusted metal.

ASHCROFT

Her pulse quickened.

Finally…

Proof.

Then, before her eyes, the letters slowly faded.

One by one.

Until the sign became completely blank.

Mara tightened her grip on the brass key.

She knew the town had a name.

She had spoken it countless times that day.

Yet, for the first time…

She couldn’t remember what it was.
