Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte took a swipe at the filing of impeachment complaints against his sister, Vice President Sara Duterte, claiming that the move had been in the works for approximately three years.
The Senate impeachment trial officially began on Monday, July 6, 2026, and concluded just recently on Wednesday, July 8.
In a statement made during an interview with Duterte supporter Alvin Sarzate on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 (The Hague time), Mayor Baste said he does not watch the impeachment trial proceedings against his sister.
The Davao City Mayor claimed that the move had been planned as early as three years ago, the time when President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. assumed office.
PBBM and VP Sara Duterte were running mates in the 2022 elections, but their Uniteam lost the unity.
“Ako, hindi ako nanonood. Kasi noong simula pa lang, when this impeachment campaign begin, it was three years ago,” the Mayor said. “Even noong simula pa lang ng termino ni Marcos ‘yan. Noong nagkalabuan na, nandiyan na ‘yang usapang impeachment against the Vice President,” Mayor Baste Duterte said.
According to Mayor Baste, VP Sara’s detractors have been piling on various other issues beyond the controversy surrounding the Department of Education’s (DepEd) confidential funds.
“For what? The confidential funds? And ngayon dinadagdagan nila kung ano-ano na lang na puwedeng idagdag,” he stressed.
Mayor Baste added that their opponents want VP Sara impeached so they can have their way and remain in power.

For him, it’s not really about the Vice President defending herself; instead, the other side just wanted VP Sara to be where they wanted her to be.
“Kaya nga nila ini-insist ‘yong impeachment na ‘yan kasi they want to remain in power. Gusto nila, sila. That’s all I can say. Kapag pumayag ‘yong mga tao, wala na kaming magagawa,” Mayor Baste Duterte said.
