Risa Hontiveros ‘Seriously Considering’ a Presidential Run as 2028 Race Heats Up
RISA HONTIVEROS – Political discussions intensified after Hontiveros admitted that she is seriously considering the possibility of seeking the country’s highest post.
Senator Risa Hontiveros has reiterated that she is seriously considering a presidential bid in the 2028 national elections, signaling that the possibility remains very much on the table as opposition groups continue to discuss their plans for the country’s political future.
Hontiveros has previously stated on several occasions that she remains open to running for President, particularly if she is chosen by the United Opposition as its standard-bearer. Her latest remarks come amid growing discussions about potential candidates for the next presidential race.
The senator’s statement also comes after Vice President Sara Duterte officially announced on February 18, 2026, her intention to run for President in the upcoming elections, making the 2028 race an increasingly significant topic in Philippine politics.
During a press conference held on Friday, June 19, Hontiveros first expressed gratitude to supporters behind the recently launched “Risa Na!” campaign, a program organized by Akbayan Party-list and several other groups aimed at showing support for her possible candidacy.
“Maraming salamat sa mga nag-express ng ganoong confidence sa akin,” she said.
She then acknowledged that she is actively weighing the possibility of seeking the highest office in the land.
“I am seriously considering it, preparing for that possibility.”
According to Hontiveros, their political ranks need to identify the strongest and most capable candidate who can earn the trust and support of the Filipino people.
“I think it is really necessary na magkaroon kami, from our ranks, ng strongest, best, most attractive, and hopeful offer sa ating mga kababayan at mga kapuwa botante,” she said.
The senator also shared her hope that their party and allied groups will be able to determine their candidate before the end of 2026 or no later than the first quarter of 2027.
“I am looking forward to that moment na end of this year or at the very-very latest sana [sa] first quarter next year, magkaisa kami sa aming ranks around whoever will emerge as the strongest contender,” said Hontiveros.
Hontiveros emphasized the importance of unity within their ranks, stressing that having a single candidate would strengthen their chances in the presidential race.
“Magkaisa kami. There can be only one para my fighting chance then laban,” she concluded.
