Pampanga Church Issues Apology After Parishioners Report Burning Sensations on Ash Wednesday
ASH WEDNESDAY – A solemn Ash Wednesday observance in Pampanga unexpectedly drew concern after several parishioners reported experiencing burning sensations on their foreheads.
A church in Pampanga has issued a public apology after receiving complaints from several parishioners who reportedly experienced skin irritation on their foreheads following the imposition of ashes during Ash Wednesday rites.
The incident involved the Santa Rita de Cascia Parish under the Archdiocese of San Fernando, Pampanga. In a statement released on Thursday, February 19, the parish addressed concerns raised by members of the community who claimed to have felt burning sensations shortly after participating in the traditional Catholic observance.

“We sincerely apologize to the parishioners who experienced burning sensations or skin irritation after the imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday,” said the Santa Rita de Cascia Parish, Archdiocese of San Fernando, Pampanga, in their statement this Thursday, February 19.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season for Catholics, during which ashes are placed on the foreheads of the faithful as a symbol of repentance and humility. The parish clarified that only standard materials were used in the preparation of the ashes applied during the ceremony held on Wednesday, February 18.
“To the best of our knowledge, only ashes and holy water were used. However, we take this matter seriously and are reviewing our preparation procedures to ensure everyone’s safety,” assurance of Santa Rita de Cascia Parish.
Despite the assurance, church officials acknowledged the seriousness of the complaints and emphasized that they are carefully reviewing their preparation procedures as part of an ongoing internal investigation. The parish underscored its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its congregation, especially during significant religious events attended by many devotees.

In the meantime, the church has advised those who continue to experience discomfort to take immediate but gentle action. Parishioners were encouraged to wash the affected area carefully and consult a medical professional if symptoms persist.
“If you are experiencing continued irritation, please gently wash the affected area and seek medical advice if needed,” they said.
The parish expressed hope that the matter would be resolved promptly as they work to prevent similar incidents in the future while maintaining the solemnity and safety of religious observances.
