Darren Espanto has created a viral trend

Kapamilya singer-host Darren Espanto shared his thoughts on his viral Maui Wowie rendition.

Darren has come a long way in the entertainment industry since he joined the televised singing competition The Voice Kids. He is now one of the most popular singers of the Kapamilya network.

Just recently, the singer went viral, and it was because of his performance in the Kapamilya Sunday musical variety show ASAP Natin ‘To. He shared his rendition of the song Maui Wowie popularized by Kid Cudi in 2008.

He was wearing a black tank top and had his moments in which he was hanging on a handlebar with one arm while he was singing the chorus, which goes, “Goin’ back to Honolulu just to get that / That Maui wowie / That Maui wowie.”

This became viral as many netizens were talking about this. Based on the article in Inquirer, Darren Espanto had to sing a higher pitch of the song for his comfortable range.

“The song was a bit too low for my register. So I sang it an octave higher kaya nag-viral siya,” the male singer said.

Darren also shared that after his viral performance, people started calling him Maui or Wowie, while some prefer the whole name Maui Wowie.

When I walked into ABS-CBN, no one called me Darren. Lahat ng nakakita sa’kin, Maui Wowie. Lahat ng mga artists, staff, and the crew. I feel like I made an impact in the entertainment landscape,” he enthused.

Then, Darren mentioned that even American content creator James Charles used his voice in a TikTok video because the latter said that he has the same voice as the singer.

Darren Espanto was not the one who first did the Maui Wowie trend, but his rendition was the one that went viral. Other celebrities who joined this trend were Kyle Echarri, Charo Santos-Concio, Rocco Nacino, Vicki Belo, UNIS’ Elisia and Gehlee, SB19, and many more.
