Why Manila’s Holiday Decor Is Less Festive This Year — Isko Moreno Speaks Out

Isko Moreno Chooses Practicality: The Real Reason Behind Manila’s Minimal Christmas Decorations

ISKO MORENO – As the Christmas rush begins, Manila finds itself unusually bare—prompting Mayor Isko Moreno to issue an apology and an explanation.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso apologized to residents for the noticeably toned-down Christmas decorations throughout the city this year. He explained that the local government had to make tough budgetary choices, opting to focus on essential needs rather than lavish holiday displays.

Domagoso said he redirected funds toward social assistance programs and the payment of long-standing debts left by the previous administration. These liabilities, he noted, included millions of pesos in unpaid utility bills for electricity, internet, telecommunications, and water that accumulated before his term began.

Isko Moreno revealed that the city originally planned to allocate P14 million for Christmas décor. However, he decided not to push through with the spending so that the budget could support more urgent programs and help stabilize the city’s financial situation. He stressed that practical and responsible use of funds should come first, especially when many families are still recovering from economic hardships.

“Pasensya na kayo, ha? Wala akong ilalagay na parol sa buong Maynila. Pagpasensyahan n’yo na ako, eh kasi that would cost P14 million. Eh, ayaw ko namang makapamuhay nang marangya tapos magdadahilan ako sa inyo ng ‘nganga,” the mayor said, emphasizing his stand on transparency and prudent governance.

He also pointed out the importance of valuing family unity and togetherness this Christmas, saying these matter more than extravagant decorations. By allocating resources to essential services instead of ornaments, Domagoso hopes that more residents will experience the true meaning of the holiday season through assistance and support.

Additionally, he reminded the public that the city government has already moved to settle major outstanding debts passed on by the former leadership, including crucial utility payments. He believes these steps are necessary to ensure continuous services and smooth government operations.

Even with fewer holiday embellishments around Manila, Domagoso reassured citizens that the administration remains focused on meeting their needs. Through his apology and explanation, he seeks to gain the public’s understanding as he continues to prioritize financial responsibility and the welfare of Manileños over extravagant spending.
