Beauty Queen Struggles With English? Herlene Budol’s Candid Story Will Make You Root for Her
HERLENE BUDOL – Fans praised Herlene Budol for her authenticity after she confessed that mastering English remains a challenge for her even after finishing her studies.
Kapuso star and beauty queen Herlene Budol recently opened up about a long-standing personal challenge—speaking English fluently. Although she has completed her studies and continues to make an effort to improve, she admitted that expressing her thoughts in clear English remains a struggle.
In her guesting on “i-Listen with Kara David,” Herlene did not hesitate to be honest about her difficulty. “Ayun nga ‘yung problema ko. Tapos naman ako ng pag-aaral pero hindi ko talaga makuha-kuha ‘yung pag-i-English na ‘yun.” She revealed that even now, she still hasn’t fully grasped the language.

Herlene also shared a lighthearted observation about how naturally fluent the younger generation seems to be. “Sa mga kabataan ngayon, kahit wala sa hitsura ‘yung mga bagets, talagang may English.” She added jokingly, “Kita mo talagang uhugin (na bata), pero talagang, ‘Mommy, why is my ganyan-ganyan?’ May English ‘day.”
According to the actress, part of the reason she struggles may stem from the shows she watched as a child, which rarely used English dialogue. “So wala akong natutunan sa kanila. Sabi ko, ‘Malas ko naman nu’ng kabataan ko,’” she said with a laugh.
Kara David reassured her that English proficiency does not define intelligence, reminding her, “Hindi naman sukatan ng katalinuhan ang pag-i-English.” However, Herlene acknowledged that being able to speak English is still an advantage. “Minsan kailangan talaga. Masarap din siguro pakinggan kapag marunong ka din mag-English,” she said.
Interestingly, Herlene mentioned that she feels more at ease talking to foreigners because they seem less critical of her. “Pero mas masarap kausapin ‘yung mga ibang lahi… Pero kapag ibang lahi, hindi ka dyina-judge,” she shared.
Kara also mentioned Kevin Dasom, Herlene’s current suitor and co-star in “Binibining Marikit.” Herlene expressed appreciation for him, saying, “Siya rin kasi ‘yung nagturo sa ‘kin… Pero nakatulong siya.”

Despite her willingness to learn, Herlene admitted she still finds grammar challenging: “‘Yun nga hindi ko alam ‘yun. Verb, noun, adjective… Hindi maganda ‘yung naging tutor ko.” But she remains committed to improving. “Promise talaga ha. Aalamin ko siya isang araw…”
Kara left her with a comforting reminder: “Basta itong tandaan mo, hindi nasusukat sa wika ang katalinuhan ng isang tao.”
To end on a humorous note, Herlene joked about a possible international acting career, saying, “Sabi ko nga kung ako magiging artista sa ibang bansa, kung gusto ko, pipi… Kasi ‘pag English, hindi talaga makakabuo ng isang sentence na tama.”
