Promising Athlete Ike Barilea Dies Just Days After His 21st Birthday
IKE BARILEA – The Philippine volleyball community is in mourning following the sudden death of Ike Barilea, a rising star and member of the Alas Pilipinas pool, just two days after turning 21.
Just two days after celebrating his 21st birthday, Alas Pilipinas player Ike Barilea passed away, the Philippine national volleyball team announced on Tuesday. Barilea, who turned 21 on November 9, was one of the promising young talents in the country’s volleyball scene. The cause of his death was not disclosed by the team or his family.
“The court feels emptier, and our hearts heavier. Rest easy, ALAS IKE BARILEA,” the team posted on Facebook.
“Thank you for the laughter, the memories, and the heart you gave to the team. Heaven gained an angel, but we lost a piece of ours. Fly high, our dear ALAS,” it added.
Barilea first rose to prominence after his impressive performance in the 2025 U21 National Finals, where he led the 1Silay Volleyball Club to a bronze medal finish. His standout showing earned him a spot in the initial Alas Pilipinas men’s pool for the upcoming 2025 FIVB Men’s World Championship.
Although he did not make the final lineup, Barilea continued to pursue his passion for the sport. He represented Santa Rosa City in the 2022 Spikers’ Turf and later joined Cignal in the 2025 AVC Men’s Champions League in Japan, showcasing his skills on both local and international courts.
Known for his athleticism and humble nature, Barilea was admired by teammates, coaches, and fans alike. His dedication to the sport and his cheerful personality made him a beloved figure among the volleyball community.
“Friends, teammates, and fans remember him as a dedicated athlete whose passion, energy, and commitment left a mark on Philippine volleyball,” Spikers’ Turf said in a statement on its website.
Tributes have since poured in from teammates, fellow athletes, and supporters, expressing their grief and honoring Barilea’s contribution to the sport.
Barilea’s untimely passing has left a deep void in the volleyball community, with many remembering him not only as a talented player but also as a kind and inspiring young man whose love for the game touched countless lives.
