Vice President Sara Duterte attended the House of Representatives on Tuesday for the budget presentation of her office, an appearance that drew notable attention as she rarely joins such proceedings.

The Office of the Vice President (OVP) has requested a ₱902.8 million budget for 2026. Duterte opted to waive the usual courtesy extended to her position and opened herself to questioning from lawmakers regarding the proposed funding.

Tension rose during the session when members of the minority bloc pressed her to explain the use of her office’s confidential funds. Duterte refused to provide details, arguing that the issue is already part of the impeachment complaint filed against her.

“This is the subject of an impeachment trial, and I would not like to discuss the defense for the impeachment trial,” Duterte told congressmen during the hearing.

Her statement was quickly disputed by House Deputy Minority Leader and ACT Teachers Representative Antonio Tinio, who stressed that there is no ongoing impeachment case. “Wala pong impeachment trial sa kasalukuyan. In fact it is archived in the Senate,” he pointed out.

The exchange underscored the unresolved legal battle still surrounding the vice president. The Supreme Court has yet to act on a motion for reconsideration that challenges its previous ruling, which deemed the impeachment complaint unconstitutional. Until the high court issues a decision, the controversy remains unresolved.
