Jaya Breaks Silence on U.S. Struggles: Fire, Stroke, and a Test of Faith

JAYA – Life in the United States hasn’t been easy for Queen of Soul Jaya, who revealed that her family endured a house fire and her husband’s stroke shortly after their move.

Filipino soul icon Jaya has opened up about the difficult challenges her family endured after relocating to the United States, revealing moments of loss, fear, and resilience that shaped their journey.

During a heartfelt interview on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda, Jaya shared that their decision to move in 2021 was not carefully planned, but as she reflected, “God had other plans.” While her career continued to flourish with performances during the pandemic, her family soon faced trials that tested their faith.

The most painful experience, Jaya recounted, was a house fire that erupted in 2022 on her daughter Sabria’s 16th birthday. Fresh from performing at a Stevie B. concert, Jaya was celebrating with her family when she noticed smoke seeping from a floor vent. Alarmed, she asked her son Gavin to investigate, only to confirm their worst fears—their home was burning.

The fire, Jaya explained, was more than just a devastating loss of property. She called it a “test of faith” that unexpectedly drew strength from within their family and their community in Washington State, a place she described as among the nation’s most “unchurched” areas. “That’s what really bonded us,” she said, “as if nothing could ever shake our faith and our love for each other.”

Just as they were recovering from the fire, another challenge emerged when Jaya’s husband suffered a stroke. Thankfully, he regained his health within days, but the ordeal reminded the family of life’s fragility and the importance of unwavering support.

Despite these setbacks, hope soon returned. In August 2022, the family was able to move into a new home, marking a fresh start after months of hardship.

Through these stories, Jaya’s candid revelations remind fans that even celebrated artists face profound struggles. Her journey is a testament to the power of faith, love, and resilience—proof that true strength often emerges in life’s darkest moments.
