After Backlash, Renee Salud Tells LGBTQIA+: Go! Igagawa ko pa kayo ng wedding gown!
RENEE SALUD – Renowned Filipino designer Renee Salud, known for his honesty and old-school views, sparked both outrage and praise for his remarks on LGBTQIA+ issues.
Renee Salud recently spoke out following criticism from some members of the LGBTQIA+ community, which stemmed from his remarks about same-sex marriage and the SOGIE bill during an interview with Toni Gonzaga.
“Kung hahabulin mo lamang ‘yung marriage para sa legalities dahil sa paghahati ng kayamanan or properties, puwede naman kayong mag-usap na lang. Maging partner na lang kayo sa aspeto na ‘yun,” said Salud, expressing doubts about the necessity of marriage for same-sex couples when it primarily concerns legal or financial matters.
Renee Salud also gave his opinion on the proposed Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression Equality (SOGIE) bill, stating, “Ako, sige bigyan ng karapatan, bigyan sila ng puwang sa lipunan kaso lang the problem with some gays they ask for too much. Masyadong entitled.“
These comments triggered strong reactions online, especially from within the LGBTQIA+ sector. Nonetheless, Salud stood by his statements. In a conversation with Bandera, he remarked, “Maraming nagalit, pero marami rin ang natuwa. E, ano pa ang magagawa ko, e, yun talaga ang sagot ko. Alam mo naman ako, e, real person ako.“
He stressed the need for mutual respect when it comes to differing perspectives: “Hindi ko ine-expect na magre-react sila ng ganu’n, kasi nga akala ko they will understand and they will respect me, they will respect my opinion.“
Recognizing the generational divide in the LGBTQIA+ community, he further shared, “Ako old school, sila mga woke. E, hindi tayo pare-pareho kaya sorry na lang. Kung magalit kayo sa akin, okay lang yun. Mas maganda nga magalit kayo, kasi nag-trending, e! But still, I love you!“
For those who may have felt offended, Salud offered a message of understanding: “Mga ineng, mga tutoy, ganito lang ang buhay, hindi porke gusto mo ay gusto rin ng iba… That’s the katotohanan. Kung gusto mong magpakasal kayo, go ahead. Igagawa ko pa kayo ng wedding gown.“
Despite his differing opinions, Salud acknowledged the strides made by the LGBTQIA+ community and affirmed his continued support, closing with a positive and accepting tone.
