From Ring to Relief: Torre’s Default Win Translates to P20M in Aid
TORRE – Acting Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte may have missed the match, but the real winner was the Filipino people as Gen. Nicolas Torre III helped raise over P20M in donations and relief.
The charity boxing event between Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III and acting Davao City Mayor Baste Duterte generated over P20 million worth of cash and in-kind donations for those affected by recent floods.
Despite Mayor Duterte’s absence at the scheduled match held at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum—leading to Torre’s victory by default—the true goal of the event was met: to provide aid for communities hit hard by recent calamities.

Following the match, Torre highlighted the success of the fundraising efforts and expressed appreciation to everyone who took part. “You are our sponsors and donors—thank you very much,” Torre said. “As of the latest report, we collected P340,000 from entrance fees and raised P16 million from donors outside the event.”
Alongside the financial aid, Torre also revealed that significant goods were donated. “We also have two tons of rice and canned goods amounting to P4.2 million. Thank you for your support,” he added.
Torre announced that the entirety of the collected aid—including both monetary donations and relief goods—will be handed over to major aid organizations. These include the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Philippine Red Cross, and its Quezon City chapter.

Shortly after the event, the PNP chief visited Baseco Port in Manila to meet with flood-affected families and oversee the initial stages of relief distribution.
The charity effort comes amid the continuing impact of the southwest monsoon, or habagat, intensified by the recent tropical storms Crising, Dante, and Emong. Current data shows that approximately 6.5 million individuals—or around 1.8 million families—have been affected across the country.
With severe weather still affecting many parts of the Philippines, the donations raised through the match provide vital assistance to communities striving to recover from the devastation.
. . . ‘grats to the winner!
