MANNY PACQUIAO – Filipino boxing legend and former senator Manny Pacquiao paid his respects to Freddie Aguilar, calling him a true icon of OPM and praising his lasting impact on Filipino music and culture.

Manny Pacquiao recently took to social media to express his grief and admiration following the passing of Original Pilipino Music (OPM) icon Freddie Aguilar. The legendary musician passed away at the age of 72 on May 27, 2025. His death was confirmed by his former partner, Josephine Quiepo, the mother of his children, including singer Maegan Aguilar.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Pacquiao shared how deeply affected he was by Aguilar’s death. “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Freddie Aguilar, a true legend and icon of Original Pilipino Music,” he expressed.

Pacquiao also spoke highly of Aguilar’s most iconic song, “Anak,” which has touched hearts across the globe. “His song ‘Anak’ touched my heart. It spoke to me, and to millions of people around the world. Totoong-totoo ang bawat salita. Ramdam mo ang sakit, ang pagsisisi, at ang pagmamahal ng isang anak.”

The boxing champion praised Aguilar’s contribution to Filipino culture and music, emphasizing the timelessness of his artistry. “Freddie’s music went beyond generations. It made us proud to be Filipino. His voice carried the soul of our nation. Malaki ang naiambag niya sa kultura at musika ng Pilipinas. Hindi natin siya malilimutan,” he wrote.

Beyond honoring Aguilar’s musical legacy, Pacquiao extended his condolences to the bereaved family and friends. “To his family and friends, my heartfelt condolences. May you find strength in the legacy he leaves behind.”

He ended his tribute with a message of gratitude and farewell to the late folk music icon, who supported Pacquiao during his most recent senatorial run. “Thank you, Freddie, for the music. Thank you for telling our stories. Paalam, Ka Freddie.”
