Controversial personality Kerwin Espinosa was wounded after being shot while campaigning in Leyte, as he is running for mayor.
Controversial candidate Kerwin Espinosa is running for mayor in the Leyte town of Albuera. The campaign period for the midterm election is still ongoing, and on Thursday afternoon, April 10, while campaigning, the alleged former drug lord was shot.
The shooting left him wounded. It occurred past 4 pm at a covered court in Barangay Tinag-an, Albuera. He suffered a gunshot in the chest, as per Raymund Palad, Espinosa’s lawyer. This claim seemed to align with the images circulating online where Espinosa was seen conscious but bleeding from a wound above the chest, near his right shoulder.
The gunman was just right in front of him. A manhunt was launched following the incident; however, as of this posting, no suspects have been identified. A hot pursuit was launched against the gunman.
During the incident, he was sitting on a chair while waiting for his turn to give a speech when the gunman shot him from behind.
Currently, he is under observation, as the shot he sustained was near his lungs. A stray bullet also wounded a teenage girl who was present at the event. She was brought to a different medical facility.
Commission on Elections Chairman George Garcia reacted, and according to him, the perpetrators should be brought to justice immediately. He added, “Ballots not bullets is the answer to our problems.”
In a previous article, Espinosa pinned down Senator Bato dela Rosa. According to him, the senator coerced him to implicate Leila De Lima. To recall, De Lima was detained for around 6 years due to alleged charges related to illegal substances, which were later on dismissed by the court.
In 2022, Espinosa recanted the allegation, underscoring how he was “pressured and seriously threatened” into implicating De Lima.
