Maureen Larrazabal Opens Up About Her Two-Year Struggle with Blindness Caused by Contact Lenses
MAUREEN LARRAZABAL – Actress Maureen Larrazabal bravely shared her harrowing experience of losing her sight for two years due to complications from wearing contact lenses, shedding light on the risks of improper eye care.
Kapuso actress and comedian Maureen Larrazabal recently opened up about a harrowing experience that left her blind for two years. In a candid revelation, Maureen shared that she lost her eyesight after sleeping without removing her contact lenses, which led to a severe eye infection.
While in Hong Kong, Maureen developed a pseudomonas infection in her eye, which caused intense pain and ultimately led to her temporary blindness. Pseudomonas bacteria are known for their aggressive nature, and in Maureen’s case, the infection spread rapidly, damaging her cornea within just a few hours. According to the actress, failing to apply eye drops before sleeping caused her contact lenses to dry out and harden, leading to a corneal tear and allowing the bacteria to enter her eye.
Despite this devastating ordeal, Maureen remained resilient. She expressed deep gratitude to GMA Network for continuing to support her career even during this challenging time. She continued to appear in television shows, proving her dedication to her craft despite her condition.
During the interview, Maureen also shared other struggles she faced throughout her life. She revealed that she had run away from home during her youth and, at one point, lived in a church. Additionally, she suffered a serious back injury before eventually experiencing blindness. Despite these adversities, she has always chosen to maintain a positive perspective on life.
When asked by her co-actress and host Mikee Quintos where she draws her sense of humor from, Maureen responded with remarkable optimism. “Hindi talaga kasi ako maarteng tao, hindi ako madrama. ‘Yung lahat na bagay, I make it light. Alam mo sa dami ng pinagdaanan ko, ‘pag kinwento ko, maiiyak ka,” she said.
“Bulag ako, two years. Natulog ako nang may contact lens, tapos tumitigas ‘yun ‘di ba kapag hindi ka nag-drops. Na-sl!t open ko ‘yung cornea, pinasukan ng pseudomonas, so pumasok siya sa mata. Pagpasok sa mata ko, few hours lang, that bacteria will melt your eye in 24 hours, ganon siya katindi.”
