Cyrille Payumo’s Apology Sparks Debate After Wearing Catriona Gray’s Iconic Gown
CYRILLE PAYUMO – Beauty queen Cyrille Payumo issued an apology after facing backlash for donning Catriona Gray’s iconic gown during her final walk at the Miss Universe Pampanga pageant.
Miss Charm Philippines Cyrille Payumo recently addressed the controversy surrounding her choice to wear Catriona Gray’s iconic gown during her final walk at the Miss Universe Pampanga pageant. In a social media post, Cyrille apologized to pageant fans who felt her decision was a misstep.
The gown, designed by the renowned Mark Tumang, was the same one Catriona Gray wore when she crowned Zozibini Tunzi as Miss Universe 2019. Cyrille viewed wearing the gown as a tribute to Catriona’s landmark victory and Tumang’s exceptional talent. However, reactions from pageant fans were mixed—some saw it as a heartfelt homage, while others felt it overshadowed Catriona’s accomplishment.

In response to the backlash, Cyrille took to Instagram to clarify her intentions. She shared photos of herself in the gown and explained that Tumang had sponsored her final walk and offered her the opportunity to wear the gown. Cyrille expressed feeling a mix of excitement, nerves, and deep honor at the gesture.
Acknowledging the diverse opinions, Cyrille emphasized that she never intended to diminish Catriona’s legacy or cause any offense. She aimed to celebrate her journey as Miss Charm Philippines and highlight Tumang’s artistry as a fellow Kapampangan designer. Cyrille apologized to those who were hurt by her decision and promised to reflect and grow from the experience.

Cyrille was crowned Miss Charm Philippines in May of the previous year during the Miss Universe Philippines coronation at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. Despite the recent controversy, Cyrille remains dedicated to representing her title with dignity and respect, valuing both the legacies of past queens and the artistry that shapes the pageant world.
