The gown, designed by the renowned Mark Tumang, was the same one Catriona Gray wore when she crowned Zozibini Tunzi as Miss Universe 2019. Cyrille viewed wearing the gown as a tribute to Catriona’s landmark victory and Tumang’s exceptional talent. However, reactions from pageant fans were mixed—some saw it as a heartfelt homage, while others felt it overshadowed Catriona’s accomplishment.
In response to the backlash, Cyrille took to Instagram to clarify her intentions. She shared photos of herself in the gown and explained that Tumang had sponsored her final walk and offered her the opportunity to wear the gown. Cyrille was crowned Miss Charm Philippines in May of the previous year during the Miss Universe Philippines coronation at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
