Regine Velasquez talked about her journey in the entertainment industry
Asia’s Songbird Regine Velasquez revealed how she handled defeat when she was still competing in amateur singing contests.
Regine has become one of the pillars of the music industry in the Philippines. Her voice resonated with the present generation and many younger artists look up to her and aspire to achieve her status.
Just like many seasoned singers, Regine also started in singing contests. At a young age, she already started her stints in amateur singing competitions in the province of Bulacan.
Her parents, especially her father, became her first mentors who also showed massive support for her during singing competitions.
In a recent interview on the YouTube channel of talent manager-vlogger Ogie Diaz, Regine Velasquez recalled the time when she joined contests and showcased her voice to the public at a young age.
The seasoned singer said that every time she would not win a contest, her father would tell her that it was “luto” or the result was fabricated even though there were times that she would commit a mistake during her performance.
“Ipo-point out niya na medyo nagkamali ka ng konti pero luto, nakita ko, luto,” Regine recalled her father’s remark. Because of this, her self-esteem was intact even though she did not win.
“Kasi ang galing ng tatay ko at saka ng nanay ko how they handled my defeat,” Regine shared, adding that somehow, her parents knew that she had the gift and they had to hone her. However, her parents also knew that she was not that good yet back then.
She recalled the time when other defeated contestants were scolded by their parents after the contest. Seeing that scenario saddened her. Regine said that she pitied her fellow contestants.
Her father would always say “luto” if she did not win despite the fact that the winner was much better than her. When Ogie asked her if she would cry when she was alone after her defeat, Regine said, “hindi, wala sa akin.”
This was because of the way how her father handled her defeat and that reflected on her. It did not matter to her as she was thinking that she was just playing.
Regine Velasquez shared a story that during a contest, while waiting for her turn to sing, she was doodling on the ground. When her name was called, she would just dust herself off and go to the stage.
