Moira dela Torre, Ben & Ben’s Songwriting: Rey Valera Has Advice

Rey Valera said that Moira dela Torre should avoid being redundant

Veteran singer-songwriter Rey Valera had these pieces of advice for singer-songwriter Moira dela Torre and indie folk-pop band Ben & Ben.

Rey’s career in the Philippine music industry is something that many younger artists aspire to have. Throughout the course of his career, he has done a lot of hit songs that have become classic songs.

As an OPM icon, he released songs that are still engraved in the hearts of many Filipinos. In a past interview, Rey was asked to react to people’s perception that Moira is the next Rey Valera. He said that he agreed with this because the female singer’s songs are emotional.

However, Rey stressed at that time that Moira should also explore other themes in her songs and not just her own experiences. For him, it is good to write about other people’s experiences as well.

In a recent interview, based on the article in Pilipino Star Ngayon, the veteran singer reiterated his advice for Moira dela Torre. “Nakuha niya ‘yung style, may hitsura naman siya at gumagawa siya ng kanta. Konting tip para hindi pare-pareho ‘yung anggulo ng kanta niya,” he said.

Rey stressed that it is important to explore other topics in a song so that other people can relate because it is not just about her.

Ang tip ko sa kanya sa isang video message, puwede niyang instead na puro istorya ng buhay niya — you can get away with it once, twice. Pero yung pangatlo, baka maging redundant,” the veteran singer-songwriter said, adding that people will eventually get bored if the same story keeps on repeating.

He also said that songwriters should put themselves in other people’s shoes or learn to empathize with other people’s feelings. Rey shared that the songs he wrote were not all about himself.

When it comes to Ben & Ben, Rey said that he felt like that band is still not exploring its full potential. For him, there was something that hindered the band from giving it all.

Parang hindi pa nila pinu-fully embraced yung papel nila. May something, mayroong pumipigil sa kanila. Hindi ko alam kung pamilya o ayaw nilang magkahiwalay. Something is holding them back, yun lang,” Rey Valera said.
