Isko Moreno Targets a Return as Mayor in the 2025 Elections
ISKO MORENO – Former Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso is seeking to reclaim the mayoral position in the 2025 elections.
Isko Moreno Domagoso has officially announced his intention to reclaim his position in the upcoming 2025 elections, filing his certificate of candidacy (COC) on Tuesday. Moreno, known for his charismatic leadership and ambitious vision for the city, shared his plans with supporters through a Facebook post on Monday, calling for a united effort to rejuvenate Manila.
He stated, “Samahan po ninyo akong muli. Let’s make Manila great again! Dinidinig ko po ang panawagan ninyo, tatakbo po akong mayor sa darating na halalan.”
In a strategic move, Isko Moreno has selected Chi Atienza as his running mate for vice mayor. The two are poised to present a formidable challenge to the current administration, led by incumbent Manila City Mayor Honey Lacuna, who filed her COC for re-election last Thursday. Lacuna and Moreno, once political allies, served together in the 2019 elections, but their relationship has recently soured amid political rivalry.
Lacuna had previously disclosed that Moreno informed her of his intentions to return as the city’s chief executive.
Tensions between the former allies escalated recently when Lacuna made headlines by telling Moreno in Filipino, “Don’t come back,” reflecting the competitive nature of their upcoming showdown. Moreno’s response to Lacuna’s remarks was measured: “Peace be with you.”
Recent surveys, including one conducted by OCTA Research, suggest that Moreno might have the upper hand in this contest. If the elections were held between July 8 to 10, the survey indicated that Moreno could secure an impressive 86 percent of the votes, compared to Lacuna’s modest 8 percent.
Moreno’s political journey has seen him rise to prominence after a bid for the presidency in the 2022 elections, where he placed fourth among ten candidates. Notably, he had endorsed Lacuna’s mayoral aspirations during the same electoral cycle, demonstrating the complexities of their evolving political relationship. As the 2025 elections approach, all eyes will be on the former mayor’s campaign and whether he can indeed make Manila great again.
