Oh Yeong-su of Squid Game Found Guilty of S*xual Misconduct
OH YEONG-SU – According to a court official, Oh Yeong-su, the South Korean actor known for his role in the popular Netflix series Squid Game’s first season, was found guilty on Friday of s*xual harassment and received a suspended prison sentence.
Yeong-su gained global recognition for his portrayal of Player No. 001 in Squid Game, which will have its second season in 2024. He won the Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes 2022 for his outstanding performance in Squid Game.
In addition to his Golden Globes win, Yeong-su received a nomination from the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Squid Game. Yeong-su was charged on November 24, 2022, due to allegations of inappropriate touching of a woman in mid-2017.
An eight-month suspended prison sentence and 40 hours of classes on sexual violence were the penalties imposed on Yeong-su. This comes after the veteran South Korean actor was found guilty of s*xual misconduct charges filed against him by an actress in 2022.
The actress, who remained unnamed to protect her identity, filed the case due to alleged hugging, hand-holding, and kissing on the cheek by Yeong-su in 2017.
Yeong-su vehemently denied the actress’s serious allegations. However, in an official statement, he released, the 79-year-old Korean actor apologized to the actress.
“I just held her hand to guide the way around the lake. I apologized because [the person] said she wouldn’t make a fuss about it but it doesn’t mean that I admit the charges,” said Oh Yeong-su.
The actor plans to appeal the court’s decision as he maintains his innocence against the actress’s accusations. The actress received sexual violence counseling in 2018 but apologized to the veteran actor in 2021 due to the success of Squid Game.
