TAPE Inc. Hopes TVJ Will Not Use ‘Eat Bulaga’ Title

TAPE Inc. has a 15-day period to appeal for the Eat Bulaga title

TAPE Inc. (Television and Production Exponents, Inc.) stated that it will continue to use the Eat Bulaga title for the Kapuso noontime show and the production company hoped that TVJ will use the title while they are appealing.

It is known to many that it was Henyo Master Joey de Leon who coined the said iconic title almost 44 years ago. He would vividly recall in interviews how he came up with the “Eat Bulaga” title.

However, Joey, along with Tito Sotto and Vic Sotto, did not have the privilege to use the title when they separated from TAPE and transferred to TV5 with their own-produced noontime show.

The iconic trio opted to use the E.A.T. title. Just recently, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHIL) released a decision in favor of TVJ. It stated that the trio’s camp was able to prove that they created the title and that TAPE Inc. could not use it but the production company is not giving up.

However, based on the report from GMA Balitambayan, the production company owned by Romy Jalosjos still has a period of 15 days to appeal. TAPE’s legal counsel Atty. Maggie Garduque said that they are respecting the decision and they will follow the process.

As confirmed by the statement released by IPO today, TAPE has a period of 15 days to appeal the decision of the adjudication officer to the Director of the BLA-IPO. Then, appealed decisions may still be appealed to the Director General of IPO within 30 days,” the lawyer said.

In a statement during an episode after the decision was released, Eat Bulaga host Paolo Contis stressed “wala pang final.” TVJ’s camp stressed “respect” amid this trademark issue.

Based on the report, TAPE Inc. asserted that they will continue to use the title. The company hoped that TVJ would not use this title yet while they are all waiting for the final decision from the IPOPHIL.

The appeal will be considered moot and academic if it heeds to the plea of TVJ. In the same vein, TAPE likewise hopes that TVJ will not use Eat Bulaga pending the appeals in accordance with the law and rules and wait for the finality of the decision,” the company stated.
