Pinay Cyclist Fails Doping Test Resulting to Suspension in Asian Games 2023

Pinay cyclist Ariana Evangelista got suspended in 19th Asian Games 2023 after she allegedly failed in doping test.

A Filipina mountain bike rider has become the second reported doping case within a 24-hour period at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, marking the third overall case. As reported by the International Testing Agency (ITA), the 27-year-old athlete has been provisionally suspended for failing a drug test due to the presence of the banned substance erythropoietin (EPO).

EPO enhances performances, the ITA said. The ITA collected two samples (blood and urine) during an out-of-competition anti-doping control on September 24 at the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022.

The athlete has been notified of the case and immediately provisionally suspended. Additionally, the athlete has the option to request the analysis of the B-sample, as stated by the ITA in their article.

The ITA further explained, “The matter will thereafter be referred to the Anti-Doping Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS ADD) for adjudication under the OCA Anti-Doping Rules. Given that the case is underway, there will be no further comments during the ongoing proceeding.

The suspension news emerged after the athlete, Evangelista, participated in the women’s cross-country Olympic mountain bike competition the following day, finishing in 13th place. Typically, it takes several days for the results of a failed test to be confirmed.

This announcement came shortly after the ITA and Olympic Council of Asia disclosed that Saudi distance runner Mohammed Yousef Alasiri had also been provisionally suspended for a failed drug test. Alasiri’s sample was collected on September 26 during out-of-competition testing, and he did not compete in the men’s 10,000m race four days later.

He had also been scheduled to participate in the 5,000m event later in the week. Alasiri tested positive for the performance-enhancing substance darbepoetin. The first known doping case at the Games involved Afghan boxer Mohammad Khaibar Nooristani on September 28.

Nooristani, who was eliminated in the preliminary rounds of the 71kg weight class in Hangzhou, tested positive for two banned substances, both anabolic steroids, and was also provisionally suspended.
