Chavit Singson Seeks Probe Against Shooting Team in Asiad

Ex-Shooting Chief Chavit Singson Wants Asiad-bound Philippine Shooting Team Probed

Former Philippine National Shooting Association (PNSA) president Luis “Chavit” Singson wants probe against the shooting team composition bound to Asiad.

The former Mayor of Ilocos Sur is urging the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) to initiate an investigation into the composition of the national shooting team. This request stems from the presence of alleged “unqualified shooters” on the national team, which resulted in a disappointing performance in the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup.

The team is scheduled to depart for the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, next week. Singson, who currently serves as the Chairman Emeritus of the Philippine National Shooting Association (PNSA), has raised questions about how the PNSA formed the national team, featuring unheralded bets.

“Being the past president of the PNSA, nabo-bother kami na nagpapadala sila ng hindi qualified. Nakakahiya kasi tayo kung kulelat ‘yung pinapadala. Okay lang kung qualified baka minalas lang pero hindi qualified eh. May qualification at qualifying score ‘yan,” said Singson.

Singson, accompanied by former national shotgun shooter Raul Arambulo, pointed out that some members of the associations are upset with the selection process for the Philippine team participating in the Hangzhou Games. They emphasized the exclusion of a promising athlete, pistol shooter Carlo Valdez, who has consistently performed well in the qualifying events.

Singson and Arambulo specifically highlighted the inclusion of Jake Ancheta in the Philippine team for the Asian Games, based on the article of Manila Times. They noted that Ancheta had a poor showing in the recent World Cup Shotgun in Lonato, Italy.

Ancheta finished dead last out of 158 competitors in the World Cup skeet competition, while Apolinario finished second to last. Ancheta was a DNF (did not finish), having dropped out after two rounds of the five-round contest.
