Pia Wurtzbach On The Miss Philippines ‘No Swimsuit’ Pageant

Pia Wurtzbach shared her thoughts on recent changes in pageants

Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach reacted to the decision of some pageant organizations to eliminate swimsuit competitions like The Miss Philippines.

A new national pageant is being introduced in the country. Just recently, The Miss Philippines announced that it presents a new concept in the world of pageantry. Based on a previous article, this pageant will no longer have a swimsuit competition, which has been one of the parts of many pageants around the globe.

Aside from that, The Miss Philippines is also introducing the Runway Segment instead of the usual evening gown competition.

In line with this, based on the article in The Philippine Star, Pia Wurtzbach was asked to share her thoughts. The third Pinay Miss Universe said that she understands why pageant organizations are eliminating the swimsuit competition.

She pointed out that Miss World started and has been doing this kind of change for several years already. Then, Pia recalled that time when she competed for Miss Universe and the reason why the swimsuit competition is being included in pageants.

When I was competing the reason why we had a swimsuit competition was to show the judges that you take care of yourself, you are fit, you are active… because you are supposed to be a role model,” she explained.

Pia also said that when the time came she became too skinny, she was told that this was not good because people might follow her because of her influence on the public. This is the reason why she understood why there was a swimsuit competition.

However, the former beauty queen pointed out that she also understands why pageant organizations are deciding not to include the swimsuit competition. She said that it is a good thing that the focus now is more on women and not on their physical appearance.

“But I’ve been seeing other competitions do a sports segment instead or maybe they will do sportswear instead of swimwear. Kasi may mga religion din na aren’t really comfortable in wearing two-piece, or showing too much skin. So, I think it’s going into the right direction where we are kind of making it less about the body but more about the women talaga,” Pia Wurtzbach explained.
